In your hand, there are a total of 14 finger bones or phalanges. Ignoring a fracture in one or more of these bones may result in permanent stiffness and discomfort. In cases of severe finger fractures, open reduction surgery becomes essential. This procedure realigns displaced bones, allowing the finger to regain its proper function post-healing. When a broken bone can be set with a cast or splint alone, it is termed “closed reduction.”

Detecting Signs of a Broken Finger

Finger injuries are among the most common hand injuries. A broken finger can occur due to various incidents, such as attempting to break a fall with your hand, getting your finger caught in a door, sports-related mishaps, or boxing. Signs of a broken finger encompass:

• Pain
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Numbness
• Difficulty in Finger Movement
• Deformity in the Finger

Swelling may extend to adjacent fingers in proximity to the fractured one.

The Essence of Broken Finger Open Reduction

Open reduction surgery becomes imperative when a fractured finger cannot be adequately treated with a cast alone. During this procedure, performed under local anesthesia for minimal discomfort, the bones are meticulously repositioned to their natural alignment. Subsequently, they are secured with pins, screws, or wires. To ensure the healed bones maintain correct alignment, a cast or splint is applied, typically worn for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Depending on the case, the pins, screws, or wires may either be removed after the finger has healed or retained to prevent any future bone displacement. Once the healing process concludes, physical therapy is usually recommended to restore flexibility to the finger joint.
